Despite putting out a good side this week we were 3 - 0 down after 28 minutes and wondering what was going wrong. Their quick young forwards were going through our centre like a hot knife through butter, we were creating countless opportunities at the other end but just could not find the finishing touch, even with an open goal in front of us.
Darren finally got us on the scoresheet just before half time, and we came out of the break knowing we were in the game and with a plan. We pulled the defence a bit deeper and kept plenty players and sticks behind the ball. SW still came at us, we conceded plenty of short corners again and struggled to get the ball clear, but we rarely allowed them the space to threaten seriously from open play. When we did get the ball out there was plenty of space behind their overcommitted midfield, we passed briskly and accurately and our strikers finally had a chance for redemption. Tom Q put a through ball past the keeper first touch from 12 yards, Darren struck again to level with 20 minutes to go. 5 minutes later Geoff H was on hand to sweep a pass on the far post against the backboard. The last quarter saw another string of SW short corners and some desperate defence in open play, but we hung on for our 5th win of the season.
Special mentions to Jon for some vital tackles in central defence, to Tom Norman and Zach for another display of energy, skill and good judgment, and to Nick as so often for bailing the defence out when we couldn't keep up. PotM however goes to Kris for untiring defensive scrapping in front of the back 4 and countless neat, unobtrusive short passes to start our counter attacks.
Finally, thanks to Clive for the hot dog lunch, great to see so many people from both teams back in the bar.
